Description of 1978 Pontiac Le Mans |
Up for auction is my rare white 1978 Pontiac Le Mans coupe with a small block Chevy 350 engine and many performancemodifications. Please note ALL modifications andmaintenancewere performed by professional certified mechanics/shops who specialize in classic GM restoration. The Story: The Le Mans was bought and owned by a couple until the mid 2000's, hen a friend of mine purchased it(His family knew the ownersof the Le Mans).Hedroveit a few years and then sold it to me.The original motoreventually gave up. I didn't want to junk a rare old Pontiac, o it became a mild restoration project for my Dad and I. The plan was to make it streetable, un to drive, ith a lot of "Go" and improved handling, hile maintaining road manners, nd give it more of a muscle car vibe in appearance. This was NEVER raced, nd was a more a father and son project to do together. It was mostly driven on sunny weekends in summer months to car shows. It only racked up a few thousand miles over the years I have owned it. The Modifications/Upgrades: -replaced original motor with used small block Chevy 350, esealed the block -Edelbrock 600 CFM 4-Barrel Carburetor w/ Electric Choke -Edelbrock Performer EPS Intake Manifold -Custom Camshaft (very mild/streetable - no "loping") -Inline Fuel Filter Exhaust: TRUE DUAL EXHAUST -Hooker Long Tube Headers (1 5/8) into collectors, into dual (2.5 inch) Magnaflow catalyticconvertersinto dual(2.5 inch) Magnaflow Mufflers, xiting out of Magnaflow slash cut exhaust tips. Nice throaty rumble, ut never obnoxious sounding, ven at full throttle. -Accel 8mm High-Temp Super Stock Ignition Wires (Blue) -Custom Ignition "Kill Switch" Installed -Summit Racing Chrome Open Element Air Cleaner with K&N Filter -Polished Silver Valve Covers -Edelbrock Breather (Chrome) -Hotchkis 1" Lowering Springs (notice the muscular stance and how nicely the tires fill the wheel wells). There is NOtire rubbing with the setup. -Monroe Sensatrac Shocks -Pontiac Rally Wheels w/ Beauty Rings & Pontiac logo inserts wrapped in Kumho 215/70/14 tires (good tread left) -Upgraded Gauge Cluster: Taken from Pontiac Grand Prix. Gauges upgraded to include new speedometer, achometer, il, emp, ater, nd fuel. Gauge Face/Pad also upgraded to "wooden" style.Original gauges had only speedometer and fuel, he rest were "dummy lights" and there was no tachometer. Please note, he original gauge clusters (2) and original gauge face/padwill be included with the sale of the car if you prefer that look. Stereo: Aftermarket Sony Receiver with CD Player & MP3. Comes withfunctional remote control.Sony Speakers in dash pad, ustom installation in both door panels (by bottom), nd in rear dash. MTX Thunder Amplifier mounted in trunk. -Custom fog lights installed -Replaced base model side mirrors with "Sport" mirrors Recently Done: -New Battery (11/14) Performed this week: Spentover $1000in repairs to ready the car for sale! -Rewired "Kill Switch" - works flawlessly (and great security for those who park on the street). -Rewired Headlights (replaced fusible links at starter for lamp feeds) Brakes: Fabrication of New Brake Lines. Replaced both front brake calipers, rake hoses, heel cylinders. Bled the system. -New Oil & Filter Change (10w40) Included with sale: -Original Owner's Manual issued by Pontiac on date of purchase -Original Gauge Cluster (2 pieces) -Original Gauge Face/Pad -Original Pontiac Emblem trunk lock cover -NEW: Accel High Performance Cap & Rotor -NEW: Accel Super Stock Hi-Temp 8mm Ignition Wires (Yellow) Note: Nothing wrong with wires on motor, as just going to change up the color (I leave the choice up to you - sell the wires if you prefer the Blue) -Someoriginalrubber trim pieces -Spare Tire -2 metal wheel ramps (if you choose to work on it yourself) Areas that need some TLC: - Leaks alittle oil, ot sure from where -occasional puff of smoke (random) -needs a repaint, but not bad looking by any means - get compliments and "thumbs up" all the time when I drive it. -some rust on rear lower area of quarter panels (see pics) andminor spots on body(see pics). The pics clearly illustrate the car requires some body work and paint. -interior needs some love. front seat is torn up from age (see pics), op of back seat is a bit brittle, ash has been recovered (prior to owning) could stand to be redone, eeds headliner, love box doesn't close Mileage: Since owned for 3 decades by older couple, believe the mileage on the car to be accurate in the vicinity of 103K. The original speedometer mileage reads approximately 95K (included with sale), nd since switching the gauge cluster, only accumulated about 8000 miles since owning it. I did not have the odometer of new cluster changed for accuracy, o please be aware of that. I want to be straight forward & honest so there are no surpises. In Closing: This was a car I had fun building with my Dad. Unfortunately, y Dad has recently passed away, nd I have to let the LeMans go. We also built a Camaro, nd a Chevy Caprice, nd I am keeping both of those, s they have the most sentimental value. I would like to see this car go to a loving "car guy" (or gal), ho has the will and drive to fix the issues, nd get it painted so it can be enjoyed by newer generations of gearheads. We spent a lot of time and money in quality name brand performance parts and professionallabor on this car over the years, nd was hoping to finish the paint/body/interior until recent events... The LeMans was the sister car to the very popular Chevy Malibu. The late 70's/early 80's Malibu's are extremely popular for restoration as well as racing. I always liked the idea of having the lesser known (but equally capable) LeMans instead of the Malibu. It is considerably more rare than all the Malibu's of this generation. People are always telling me they never see these on the road anymore and that they love how I "muscularized" it. It is certainly most unique. The car is available to be picked up in New Jersey. If you would like to tow or ship it, hen it is up to you to organize and arrange it. I will gladly assist in making sure the car is picked up once you give me all the details.
