Description of 1970 Porsche 914 914-6 GT Configuration |
1970 PORSCHE Original 914-6 - Vintage GT Race Build PATRICK MOTORSPORTS is pleased to offer one of the finest 914-6 Vintage Race car builds available ! The original GT was a race configured version of the 914-6. The factory offered the GT option mainly in parts, which was distinguishable by its box-like steel fender flares. It quickly became known as the914-6 GT and was commonlyraced employing engine configurations from 2.0L to 2.5L. We started this build with an ORIGINAL 914-6 that was "never damaged or hit" and rust was virtuallynon-existingforthe 914-6 Vintage Racing GT shown here. No expense was spared to achieve the level of quality for this914-6 GT (clone), with the main goal to compete in Vintage Racing. We began by completely disassembling the chassis to a bare shell. In keeping with building a lightweight car we removed all of the heater tube system. Next, the entire chassis was then acid dipped before any metal work and fabrication began. This achieved a clear view of what we would be building upon. As always safety is a concern for any car that will see track time and our project coordinator and fabricators spent time designing the full chassis reinforcement & roll cage system withreinforced suspension pick up points. The main hoop utilizes 1.75” o.d. tubing while an extensive use of 1.50” tubing completes the rest of the PATRICKMOTORSPORTS cage system. While still mounted to the chassis fixture table, the process for fitting the “GT” flares began. We used steel flares and hand formed these to the body the old fashioned way, by “hammer and dolly”. This allowed us to back cut the quarter panels and then “ butt weld” the flares to the chassis for aseamless appearance. The 914 was moved to our award winning body and paint department, fitted on the“rotisserie” the body and paint men to go to work smoothing out the body, and then apply the DuPontepoxy primer sealer to the bare chassis. To save weight we added lightweight GT style front hood, GT style rear deck lid, GT style bumpers, GT style rockers, finished with GT style front valence then fitted & finished to perfection. Next it was rolled into our paint booth to have the Yellow DuPontIMRON epoxy paintsprayed over the entire chassis.Once the paint was baked and cured it received a light wet sanding and polish, the front end & all leading edges are wrapped in 3M clear bra for the ultimate protection & durability ! Our in house Engine Building department put together an original 914-6 2.0 L engine utilizing only the finest parts available. The 914-6 case, however not original to this car, was boat tailed, squirters added, shuffle pinned, and had its oil bypass updated. A 930 oil pump and late lay-shaftwere added. The rotating assembly utilizes a counter weighted crankshaft that has been cross drilled, knife edged “lightweight” . Rods are Pauter C.M. lightweight. All of the bearings for this rotating assembly received Calico Black low friction coating. The pistons are a specially made 81mm bore - 11.5 CR, inside of special81mm Biral steel/alum. cylinders. Heads consist of 911T units that have been reworked with bigger valves, twin plugged, and have been ported and flowed to 39mm/35mm. This has been developed for 2.0 class racing over many years of racing these cars by PATRICK MOTORSPORTS. Completing the top end are 49mm 4 bearing cam housings ( late style) with specially ground profile cams. Rockers, shafts, and feet all magnifluxed. We used late aluminum chair boxes & covers as well as 930 valve covers. Finishing this off with a hydraulic tensioner set with updated idler arms and gears. A late Carrera fan/housing/alternator assembly also making their way. To ensure longevity a 16 quart front mounted oil tank with heater, as well as a front mounted GT oil cooler were installed.Sparking all of this is a PATRICK MOTORSPORTS twin plug distributorutilizing 2) MSD CD boxes and 2 MSD hot coils. Fuel is delivered from the PATRICK MOTORSPORTS / FUEL SAFE fuel cell supplying a Holley fuel pump (full flow regulator w-return to tank) to the 40mm PMO carbs, the ITG filter system keeps it all clean. Exhaust is spent thru a PATRICK MOTORSPORTS hand built 304 stainless steel header system featuringoptimized merge collectors, and stainless steel megaphones with s.s. sound absorbing mesh. PATRICK MOTORSPORTS in house transmission department received the transaxle as well. Starting with a 901 side shift unit which has been blueprinted with a 904 main-shaft (interchangeable 2ndgear) new bearings, syncro's and sliders. Fittedwith close ratio 2nd -5th gear sets, WaveTrac differential, and Billet intermediate plate. The flywheel is a PATRICK MOTORSPORTS billet lightweight unit with a Quarter Master 5.5” clutch package to keep the rev's up and handle the horsepower. An external oil cooler and pump system with temp controlled relay switch help to keep transaxle temps down. *AdditionallyPATRICK MOTORSPORTS will evaluate the gear ratiosto suit the buyer needs. One look inside the interior tells anyone that this is a race car with a purpose. The entire car is wired with Aircraft Mil. Spec wire & RayChem DR25 protective coating. All fuses are re-settable 3 amp to 15 amp type, Tyco 25 amp relays, with a main chassis 60 amp re-settablerelay. You will also notice the hard wired lap transponder, hour meter, charging / jump coupler, a cool suit controller and an AIM Sport Dash system with GPS & built in track mapping all mounted in the PATRICK MOTORSPORTS custom built dash. A ODYSSEY PC925 epoxy gel battery powers it all up. Keeping the driver snug in the Sparco GRP Light 8855 seat, SHROTH Hans 6 point Profi belt system. A 10lb fire suppression system with 4 discharge points will aid in keeping one safe. From here PATRICK MOTORSPORTS highly trained technicians went to work to finish this 914-6 GT with the suspension and brakes that would keep it planted on the track. The front suspension we utilized 911SC hubs with steel M calipers and HAWK dtc 30 pads as well as cross drilled & ventilated rotors mounted up to 911 RSR BILSTEIN struts with raised spindles and billet upper strut mounts. A 911 Carrera steering rack is also utilized. Finishing off the front suspension are 911 control arms with 21mm torsion bars. Keeping unnecessary lean to a minimum is a 25mm adjustable front sway bar system. The rear suspension is assembled with PATRICK MOTORSPORTS reinforced trailing arms with toe adjustments & lock out. BILSTEIN Sport shocks with Eibach springs finish the suspension. Stopping is provided by the 911 steel calipers and HAWK DTC 15/05 pads. Sending the fluid thru the stainless steel chassis hard brake lines into stainless flex lines is provided from a ATE 19mm master cylinder controlled by a TILTON brake bias control valve. Factory FUCHS 7"x15" front, and 8"x15" rear wheels wrapped in HOOSIER R-6 DOT tires complete the package. The 914-6 has had a complete weight balance, set up & alignment, and has been tuned on our DynoJet chassis Dyno. Thiscar has been track tested at the private INDE Motorsports Ranch in Az..
