Description of 1967 Shelby GT500 |
This vehicle is located at our Sun Prairie, WI location. Call 608.318.1945 with any questions! By 1966 it was clear to both Ford and Carroll Shelby that Shelby GT buyers sought more creature comforts and a distinctive look, and they had it all in the aggressively styled 1967 GT500. The slightly larger 1967 Mustang was the perfect platform to introduce big-block power back into the Shelby lineup. Originally planned as a GT350 option, the 428 CI Police Interceptor engine found its own home in the GT500. Rated at 355 HP, the Police Interceptor had the same performance camshaft that would later be used in the famed 428 Cobra Jet engine, and employed dual-inline Holley 600 CFM 4-barrel carburetors with progressive linkage and vacuum-actuated secondaries on an aluminum intake manifold. It also received the Mustang’s heavy-duty suspension with Shelby-exclusive progressive springs and stiffer sway bars, and wheels were enlarged to 15 inches to handle the 428’s increased weight, but it was the GT500’s incredible acceleration that won buyers’ hearts. Built on March 22, 1967, and shipped to Jack Stewart Ford Inc. in Chicago, IL, this 1967 GT500, Shelby number 1519, is the recipient of an exterior cosmetic restoration in April of 2005 that finished the original sheet metal in correct Brittany Blue base/clear coat, and features the ORIGINAL black interior. This is truly a special find, and the true Shelby enthusiast and connoisseur will especially appreciate the attention to originality that comes only with a car that has been preserved and loved while still being enjoyed for barely over 61,000 documented miles on the roadways of America. Also truly appreciated will be the rarity of the options and equipment that comes with this stunning, investment quality automobile, and proven by the Deluxe Marti Report. Starting with the exterior; this Brittany Blue Shelby is a refreshing change from the typical Wimbledon White or Dark Moss Green that you can find just about anywhere. The Brittany Blue exterior is one of the most sought-after original colors, and there were only 438 originally. Pairing with the rare Brittany Blue paint is the fact that this car never had the typical dealer applied stripes added which makes it even more desirable to the finicky collector. The paint was professionally laid over original sheet metal in April of 2005, and looks absolutely amazing. The only visible flaw is some slight cracking near the hood scoop which is extremely common on these cars, and a slight paint bubble in the same location. The exterior of the car still retains a fair amount of originality including the original door handles, rear bumper, mirrors, tail light lenses, and most trim pieces. The iconic upper and lower Shelby scoops are believed to be original with the lower scoops operable and functional. Inside the grill sports the original inboards that only came with the early production Shelby’s making this car even more rare and unique in today’s market. All the glass is original, and in near perfect shape without any of the typical scratches you might find in a car of this age. The interior of the car is shown exactly how a true collector wants to see it. Almost completely original with the exception of the carpet. Just take a close look at the original Shelby wood-rimmed, 3-spoke steering wheel that is in pristine condition, and you will see how special this vehicle truly is. The shifter has been replaced, but the original comes with the car to help retain its originality. The roll bar is completely intact and un-restored along with the seat belts and retractors. All the upholstery is original, and shows just enough wear on the driver’s seat to convince even the most discerning enthusiast of its original low-miles. Take a look at the passenger side sun visor, and you will find Carroll Shelby’s original signature scribed with a Sharpie with the photo documentation to prove its real! The dash and instrument panel are in beautiful, original condition featuring the original AM radio, below-dash Stewart Warner oil and ammeter gauges and 8,000 RPM tach that were all part of the Shelby GT treatment. The underside of the car shows very well, and very original. Unlike cars that have had frame-off restorations; this Shelby isn’t hiding anything. Take a look at the rear of the car, and notice the original tie-down eyelets that were used to ship the car securely by railcar from the Ford assembly plant to the Shelby factory. Under the hood lies the famed 428 ci Police Interceptor with the original dual Holley 600cfm carburetors feeding the beast. Continuing with the vibe of the rest of the car; the engine bay is unrestored and features factory options like power steering, power front disc brakes, heavy duty battery and extra cooling package. The car does have a replaced wiring harness that alleviated the typical wiring issues the cars from the 60’s had. Power from the 355HP monster is transferred to the ground through the original Ford syncromesh top-loader 4-speed manual transmission back to the original 3.25:1 posi-traction rear end. The finished product is resting on a set of reproduction Kelsey Hayes Deluxe Mag Star 15” wheels and BFGoodrich 225/70R15 radial tires for better drivability. The end result is an absolutely beautiful example of a rare, iconic car that you just cannot find every day. There are other 1967 Shelby’s out there, but how many are originally Brittany Blue with stripe delete? Then add an original 4-speed? Then figure in the original interior and inboard driving lights! The uniqueness of this car along with the tremendous amount of originality it retains makes this a highly sought-after collector that will not last long at this price!
