Description of 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser |
2011 ICON FJ40 This 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 has been extensively rebuilt and modified by ICON 4×4 of Chatsworth, California. The build was commissioned in 2010 by the original owner out of Arizona, and he eventually sold the truck back to ICON founder Jonathan Ward in 2015. It was then thoroughly inspected and serviced by ICON before being sold to the current owner in 2018, who recently moved the truck from California to Connecticut. The initial build included new aluminum body panels, a new frame, and installing a new interior with many custom touches. Fox shocks and Eibach springs were added along with ARB locking differentials and StopTech brakes, and power is now provided by an aluminum 6.0-liter LS V8 paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The handmade soft top, bumpers, and CNC’d aluminum hardware located throughout the truck are also custom ICON pieces. Just over 5k miles have been added since the build was completed and now offered with a clean California title. The body was finished with a Rocky Mountain Grey Teflon-polyester hybrid powder coat that contains suspended mica particles for a unique finish. The underside, inside of fenders, and interior floors are coated with a heat-cured polyurea. All of the hardware is marine-grade stainless steel or CNC’d aluminum. The insulated soft top and half doors are handmade ICON items with Mercedes canvas and marine-grade YYK zippers. Updated lighting includes LED headlights and a reverse light mounted on the rear bumper.A Warn winch and auxiliary LED lights are attached to theICON front bumper, and the brand’s signature bronze California Blue-Belly lizard can be seen on the grille.Amp Research side steps have also been installed. The handmade ICON rear bumper has swing-away spare tire and auxiliary fuel can carriers with CNC’d aluminum hardware. All five 17″ Hutchinson run-flat beadlock wheels wear BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A tires. This ICON was ordered with the Chilewich fabric package that consists of inserts in the front and rear seats, as well as floor mats. The metal half door panels are powder coated to match the exterior color. Rosen sun visors used in Learjets have been fitted for the front passengers, and a powder coated ICON roll cage can be seen in the back. A powder coated instrument housing features Autometer gauges, and a custom dash panel includes CNC’d aluminum knobs, a Marinco 12V power port, round Cessna Aircraft aluminum air vents, and switches for the air lockers and auxiliary lighting. The fire extinguisher is an ICON item, and CNC’d aluminum front windshield latches are pictured above. The digital odometer shows 5,128 miles, which indicates the distance covered since the build was completed. The Pioneer touchscreen head unit fits inside the Tuffy center console lock box. An amplifier powers speakers in the front kick panels and rear corners, and the head unit’s display is linked to a rearview camera. Atuck and tumble rear bench seat can be removed if desired. The aluminum 6.0-liter LS Vortec V8 is backed by aGM 4L65E 4-speed automatic transmission and an Atlas 2-speed transfer case. The engine is described by Jonathan Ward as producing just under 490 horsepower and 480 lb.ft. of torque. A K&N air filter with dry sock was installed along with a Griffin aluminum radiator, Optima battery, PSCpower steering pump, and a ceramic coated exhaust system. A Dynatrac ProRock 44 front axle with Warn hubs and a ProRock 60 rear axle have replaced the stock units. The truck is also equipped with front and rear ARB locking differentials and a dedicated on-board air compressor. A new powder coated and reinforced frame crafted by Art Morrison was used during the build. The suspension utilizes Fox shocks with steering stabilizer and Eibach springs. The 4-wheel power disc brake system includes slotted rotors, StopTech brake calipers, and a Wilwood master cylinder. Vehicle is sold AS-IS.
