Description of 1961 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon |
VW Panel Van
1961 VW Van with 1962 Porsche 356 engine and TWO complete spare 356 Porsche Engines.
Very rare, rust free and historically correct vehicle. Factory walk through without lovers in upper rear corners. Spare tire is located on the left inside rear corner.
Third owner since new.
No irreversable, nonsense manipulations or conversions such as air suspension etc. etc.
History: It was bought new by a Laundry Business in Los Angeles in 1961. Then it was sold to the second owner in 1965, who repainted it and installed the Porsche engine along with other, period correct, modifications. It was then used as a shop vehicle for a Porsche Shop in Santa Monica which specialized in the Porsche Carrera Four Cam Engines and this Van was even known to be used to tow 356 Porsches on a trailer. The owner eventually moved to Prescott, Arizona and when he became sick sold the Van to me in 1998. I have owned it ever since and now need to thin out my collection a little bit.
Again: This is a fully operational, unrestored vehicle with period correct modifications and patina. Patina does not mean rust and junk in regards of this vehicle ! I have also many parts and possibly even the photos showing it with the Laundry Company lettering on it.
Modifications done by second owner in 1965:
Installed 1962 Porsche 356 Engine with big bore kit, two Zenith Dual Carbs, custom exhaust system, High Capacity Discharge Ignition System, Quick connections for generator and fuel lines, stock Porsche 356 external Oil Filter Cartridge, electric fuel pump etc.
Larger Fuel Tank, electric custom fuel gage.
Modified Transmission (later / stronger) version with taller gear ratio for highway cruising. Custom made Stainless Steel rear axle nuts.
Real Porsche rims which were widened for larger 15“ Tires. Rear wheel opening have been very gently modified with correct bead around opening. No Bondo.
Porsche H4 headlights, Hella Backup Lights Electrical outlet for trailer use. Optima Red Top Battery. Teflon mudflaps in rear with stainless steel hardware Stainless Steel air intake scoops for engine. Stainless Steel exterior mirrors. Rear custom wood bumper.
Vehicle painted yellow and shaved the front emblem.
Modifications and other Repair Work done since 1998 by current owner:
Remove entire interior and clean vehicle from inside. Build custom brackets and install 1984 VW Rabbit GTI Seats with three point Seat Belts. Custom build folding platform in rear for use as bed or cargo transport. Install new quality rubber floor mats for front and rear. Install new front door panels. Install new safety glass front windshields with new quality weather stripping. New quality weather stripping for all doors. Two electric horns off 59 Chevy El Camino installed. New tires installed
Engine removed and top end rebuilt with new big bore kit. All engine sheetmetal cleaned, refurbished and powdercoated. New engine compartment seals. New transmission mounts and clutch installed Rebuilt custom generator Rebuilt Starter installed
Partial repaint on side doors and section between cargo door and wheel well. (Was in primer when I bought the vehicle)
Otherwise this paint is the paint which was applied in 1965. It had faded areas, dings, dents and scratches. No undercoating and very clean, rust free undercarriage.
All floors are original and even the battery tray is original and not rusted. What it could use:
Paint Front axle, king pin bushings etc. Brake Service Sliding window and Vent window seals Minor rust bubbles starting on rocker panel under side cargo doors, otherwise perfect with super straight front nose panel.
What comes with it: Trailer hitch with cast Iron attachment crossmember Several spare wheels and rims One spare engine lid Several old parts
TWO COMPLETE 356 PORSCHE ENGINES, one running and one without known history. Decent, complete 356 Engines are now costing right around $ 10.000.
