Description of 1986 Volkswagen Golf |
'86 U.S. made (Westy) Golf with drivetrain from a '98 Jetta TDI and Land Rover mechanical injection pump conversion. Have had this car for 7 years, and spent well over $6000 in upgrades and modifications, but too many projects now, so unfortunately it has to go. Car is basically sorted, and is an absolute blast. Estimated 140+HP and has done 9.7's in the 1/8th mile. Will quickly bury the needle on its 100mph speedometer, but is still very drivable, and much quieter than with the original 1.6 NA engine that was removed. Car is just as content at being used as the pleasant 80's econobox that it is and getting 50mpg, as it is at being hooned around town leaving trails of tire and diesel smoke in its wake, along with some rather perplexed commuter drivers. Has proven very reliable in the 6 years since I've performed the TDI swap, always starts instantly even in sub-freezing temps, and consumes little to no oil. Great autocross car, is also super tail-happy on loose terrain and would take minimal prep work to turn it into a killer Rally or Rallycross rig. Alternatively, due to its all mechanical injection system and complete lack of electronics, would be a great EMP-proof doomsday mobile if you're into that kind of thing and can find a hill to start it on. Chassis Modifications
Odometer Mileage Odometer mileage was previously correct to car (adjusted after cluster swap), but #1 digit of odometer randomly slipped from a 1 to a 7 while driving one day, so reads 780,000 instead of 180,000The TDI engine and transmission were removed from a car with around 140,000 miles and swapped into this car when it had around 160,000 miles.
