This 1976 Volkswagen Type 181 is a Mexican-market pickup example that is said to have been purchased new by the a state government in Mexico, and it was acquired by me in February 2022 and subsequently imported to the US. Refurbishment work completed under prior ownership included repainting the body in yellow and installing a 1.8-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. The seats are upholstered in black vinyl, and additional equipment includes black-painted bumpers, 14″ steel wheels, side curtains, three-point seat belts, and steel bed stakes with wood slats. This Type 181 pickup is offered with import documents and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name. Based on the contemporary Type 181, the pickup was reportedly produced for the Mexican market in limited numbers. This example was refinished in its current shade of yellow under prior ownership and features a single-cab roof cover, a fold-up bed floor panel, and metal bed stakes with wood slats that were replaced under current ownership. Exterior details include black side curtains, black-painted bumpers, and driving lights. Steel 14″ wheels wear VW-stamped hubcaps and are wrapped in 205/70 Tornel A/T-09 tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel drum brakes. The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in textured black vinyl, along with body-color metal surfaces. Appointments include three-point seatbelts, a rear cab window, a 12-volt outlet, and a fire extinguisher. The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a 100-mph VDO speedometer with an inset fuel level gauge, as well as a tachometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 11k kilometers (~7k miles), approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership. The seller notes the metric speedometer face was replaced under prior ownership to display miles. The replacement air-cooled 1.8-liter flat-four was installed under prior ownership and is fed via a single downdraft carburetor.Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle.
