Description of 1973 Volkswagen Other |
I have for sale a custom build from the ground up, naked, door-less,open air on road/off road cruising buggy. This is the second one I have built. The‘naked look’ in automotive design means that, as much as is feasible, the mechanical inner workings are visible, aesthetically finished, and meant to be appreciated by the observer. Here’s some more about the build: I have always had a deep admiration for the work of Porsche. The donor was a 73 IRS bug with some serious decay in the pan. As I have built tube chassis in the past it seemed logical to go that way. The tubular frame is drawn die formed from 1.66d, .140 wall, 63,100 psi tensile, 54,600 psi yield structural steel pipe, much stronger and thicker wall than tubing of that size, but harder to work with. It is gas mig welded, painted with zinc primer and finished in flat black. The tube and tab welds are finely ground, filled and finished so as to give the appearance of flowing into one another. The engine/transaxle, mounting horns, front suspension tubes, steering box, pedals and parking brake are from the original pan. All the rest of the car’s suspension and steering gear is assembled from new parts. All the lights and glass are DOT approved. The side body, fenders, windshield mount, dash and floor are fabricated from .125 aluminum and are stainless bolted. The hood is fabricated from .8 aluminum and is stainless bolted. The wheels are Empi's Vintage VW Empi Dish machine finished aluminum. The tires are new 185/65R15 88 T front, P205/60R15 90S rear. The brakes are disk front, shoe rear, and the lines are fabricated from stainless brake tubing. The engine is a 1776cc with dual Weber, 40 IDF 70 6E carbs, a 2012MAGNASPARK II distributor and a new internally regulated alternator. The motor runs beautifully and does not burn oil. The transaxle has no issues. Both the motor and transaxle have been carefully wire brush cleaned to bring out the natural beauty of the bare magnesium alloy metal. The switches, circuit breakers and wiring are all new, and a wiring diagram is included. The gauges are new and consist of: tachometer, gps speedometer, fuel, oil pressure, oil temperature, voltmeter, hour meter. The car comes with the Hawaii title for the doner 73 bug and the original body VIN numbers are mounted on the dash. The chassis VIN had rusted away. Runs and drives perfect no problems at all. I will provide finely detailed photos of any part of the vehicle upon request, as well as video of the car in action. Build receipts and photos of the building process will be made available to you if you would like them You are welcome to contact a mechanic of your choice to come out and inspect the vehicle. If you would like a Hawaiian get away come on out to the Big Island and test drive it yourself. The vehicle is being sold "AS IS", with no warranties, expressed or implied. I will deliver the car to either the port of Hilo or Kawaihae on the Big Island. All other shipping charges and arrangements are the buyer's responsibility. Contact me and I will endeavor to answer any questions you may have. This is a no reserve auction |
