Description of 1979 Volvo 240 V8 Conversion |
327 V8 stroked to a 302CI This car is a hoot!! This wasNOT done by some kid in his back yard. It was done by the leading Volvo repair shop in the Southwest; they have done work for my Volvo specialty dealershipfor the last 25 years. It was done as a filler project during the winter slow months. However, business has been great and ithas never really slowed down enough for them to finish it. Their loss isyour gain. I would say that 80% of the HARD and EXPENSIVE (over $20K invested) work has been completedand the big moneyalreadyspent. Starting with an original unmolested Volvo 242body they installed a newly rebuilt Chevy 327 enginestroked to a 302 CIand a Holley 650cfm carburetor. The motor was built to be fun, however, not atthe expense of being unreliable (it's a Volvo after all...). It starts easy and idles smoothly, the exhaust is throaty, but, notannoyingly loud.AMuncie M-22 4 speed transmission with a Wilwood hydraulic clutch and a short throwHurst Shifterwas installed and shifts smoothly. NEW aluminum radiator with two electronically controlled fans. Custom drive shaft and single drivebelt conversion withNEWpower steering pump, water pump, A/C compressor, and Alternator installed. A custom exhaust was installed with headers and Flowmaster dual inlet muffler NEWVolvo diesel engine front springs were installed to accommodate the additional weight of the V8 and new struts were installed. A new rear sway bar was installed. It has Volvo disc brakes at all four corners and Volvo turbo wheels. The car handles well with noodd clunks or rattles. NEWAutometer gauges were installed and all function as they should including turn signals and e-brake indicators. As you can see all the hard work and expenses have already been done, however, there is still some tinkering to be done. Although the A/C compressor is new, there will have to be some hoses made for it to function (correct compressormanifold included). The body and paint are all original with no evidence of any accident damage. New Mexico is a dry climate so rust is not really an issue here, however, there is one quarter size blister on one rocker panel (see picture). Depending on rather you want a Sleeper or a Pro Tourer this is the car, nice and straight. It runs, shifts and handles and stopsgreat. As it is nowit is an unbelievable sleeper; at stop lights people are looking around to see where that tame but lethal rumble is coming from. At Show and Shines it is a total hit with the hot rodders. Feel free to contact me with questions. There are additional picturesand we are trying to get a video posted to my website @ volvoguy.comso you can hear this car run. They are realistic about their reserve, so, bid it to own it. Thom 505 250-1120 |
