Description of 1961 Ford Galaxie |
FOR THOSE WHO MAY HAVE PREVIOUSLY READ THIS DESCRIPTION; ON APRIL 26th THE SELLER ADDED MORE INFORMATION WHICH CAN BE READ AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS DESCRIPTION !!! I want to stress at the outset that you must read all checkout instructions and any other terms of this sale BEFORE bidding. Any deviation from my stated terms must be discussed with me via “ask seller a question” BEFORE you bid. Having gotten that out of the way: Up for auction is this beautiful 1961 Ford Starliner 2 dr., no-post sport coupe. If you’re looking for a trailer queen show car or a daily driver then this car’s not for you. If, however, you’re in the market for an affordable, very highly regarded classic collector car that you can relaxingly drive on a beautiful day or draw a crowd at a local cruise-in or gas pump, then you need to consider this car. It gets lots of love wherever it goes. Let's cover the mechanicals first. It's powered by a strong running 352 cubic inch FE big block engine with optional tripower carburetion. My understanding is that this option was not installed at the factory but instead was a Ford manufactured but dealer installed option. It features an original Ford manufactured aluminum intake manifold, topped with a matched set of Holley 2300 series carbs stamped with Ford part numbers. This setup is complimented with correct FOMOCO cast iron "Shorty" headers. The transmission is the Borg Warner T-86 3 speed overdrive column shifted manual. It is freshly rebuilt and shifts flawlessly. A really cool feature of this transmission is that if you're cruising along in overdrive and simply press the accelerator to the floor it will automatically downshift to low 3rd (passing gear) without having to press in the clutch or move the shift lever - just like an automatic! Even cooler is that this action also causes the outboard carbs to open up, delivering a rather impressive burst of power. Finishing out the drivetrain is a 3:56 ratio differential. The wheels are a 5 piece (including the spare) set of original 1972 dated Ford Magnum 500's in fantastic condition. SELLERS NOTE: The photo showing the engine with air cleaner was taken some time ago and had incorrect 390 decals on the valve covers. I include this photo only to show the original Ford air cleaner included with this sale. Now let's talk about the body and interior. Again, this is an unrestored, largely unmolested car. It has been recently repainted, probably within the last few years. The paint is not show quality but presents itself very nicely at cruise-ins, shows and gatherings, probably an 8 out of 10. Chrome and brightwork has been redone. The wing window assemblies have been rebuilt and rechromed using all new seals. Door seals have been replaced as needed. All glass, with the exception of the rear window, has been replaced using all new seals. The interior is all original and for a 57 year old vehicle it's in excellent condition but is showing some age. No rips or tears to the upholstery, door panels or headliner. Carpet is a recent replacement and is nice. Dash has the original paint and with the new chrome pieces, looks very nice. In summary, what is being presented here is a highly regarded, highly collectible classic car with significant investment growth potential. This is not some chopped up, amateurishly modified, improperly molested "project". As it is, this vehicle is one of the more popular cars at any gathering my wife and I go to. It gets lots of love wherever it goes and It generally takes about 20 minutes to get fuel at the gas station because people always want to inquire about it. It needs nothing else to be enjoyed right now however if you wish to take it to another level, there is room for that also without breaking the bank. Again, as I have stated, this vehicle is somewhere between a daily driver and a show queen so it does have some MINOR issues. If you're looking for a 1961 Starliner that is in perfect condition inside and out you will pay between $50,000 - $100,000 dollars for it. If you want a beautiful 1961 Starliner with some minor age issues, then this is the car for you. Good luck in your hunt. Thanks for your interest ! NOTE: On April 26 the seller added: QUESTION from an Ebayer: "I checked the VIN number and the V decodes as a 223 cubic inch 6 cylinder from the factory..." ANSWER: "You're correct. Good research. That's why I posted the pertinent parts of the VIN number. I didn't expound on this in the ad because a 1961 vehicle predates "matching numbers". The manufacturers didn't stamp VIN numbers on engines or transmissions until somewhere in the late 60's. If you are into the "numbers" on a 1961 car then individual component date codes would come into play. Having said all of that...No, this Starliner does not possess the original equipment nor a "desirable" VIN number. However, as stated in the post, it is 100% "period correct", meaning, the 352 cu. in. engine under the hood right now is what would have been under the hood if it had an X code in the VIN. The tripower setup (which is 1961 dated) was an option therefore never would have been identified as original equipment even if it were as there were no build sheets, or fender or cowl tags in 1961 showing factory options. This particular Starliner was not only upgraded to the big block 352 but also, according to the data plate which shows it originally came with a conventional 3 speed manual transmission, it also has the Overdrive upgrade which greatly compliments the V8 power. The 352/overdrive conversion appears to have been done years ago but with impressive attention to detail and meticulous historical accuracy. So, no, not a "numbers" vehicle but definately the next best thing! Remember, if you are looking for a pure V8 "numbers" car IN THIS CONDITION you will pay a LOT more money. As a side note, I also have the certified title history of the car which has spent its entire life in North Carolina. I met with the original owner a few months ago in Lincolnton, NC, where the car originated from and took pictures of the original owner (now his 90's) with the car. I am happy to share all of the information that I got from him. Keep the questions coming! Keywords: street rod, muscle car, bubble top, hardtop, 2 door no-post, low rider, vintage, 6 pack |
