Description of 1988 Jeep Cherokee

For sale is a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. 2-Door, 4x4. 4.0L I6. Auto. 95,145 miles. Clean IL title.

The interior is in excellent condition, no rips or tears in the seats, but discovered a section of vinyl on driver's side seat starting to peel a little. Weatherproof floor mats. Carpet in really great shape. Power windows work but a bit sluggish. Power locks work. Headliner is sagging and could use replacement. The aftermarket sunroof is siliconed over (by previous owner) so it’s inoperable. Aftermarket stereo and speakers in stock locations. One crack in the seam of the dash. Speedometer cable came loose from back of dash, and I cant get it to stay in. Cable is intact and gauge works, but must be missing a plastic tab on the connector.

Despite very fading paint, the body and underside are remarkably clean and rust free. Frame rails are solid. All body panels and plastic body pieces are intact and solid. There is a plastic ring that goes around the lock cylinder of rear hatch that broke off. Replaced once and broke off again. Reading about that on the XJ forums, seems to be a common issue.

Since this is a 34 year old vehicle, the following maintenance and updates were performed within the last couple hundred miles:

New battery Replaced rear brake shoes and hardware

  • Replaced brake master cylinder, front hoses, calipers, pads.
  • Cleaned Throttle body, new gasket new IAC, new TPS
  • New coil and ignition control module (ICM)
  • New Vacuum line harness
  • New fuel filter
  • New spark plugs, disti cap, and plug wires
  • New Renault style crankshaft position sensor (redesigned)
  • Replaced fuel injectors (746 upgrade)
  • 1990 ECU Swap (picked up a few HP)
  • Fuel Pump and sending unit

If you know about RENIX-era XJ’s, you know there are a bunch of areas that had some issues from the factory. Thanks to info posted by the XJ community and a Jeep Guru (@Cruiser54), several of those problem areas have been preemptively addressed as follows:

  • Eliminated C101 connector in engine bay.
  • Refreshed grounding area on block.
  • Soldered ground connections in main harness that were only crimped from factory.
  • Cleaned relay receptacles.
  • Added additional instrument panel ground wire.
  • Modified valve cover baffles (inside) to prevent oil backup and reinstalled with new gaskets.
  • Bypassed power/comfort switch.

This is a 35 year old vehicle and is being sold AS IS.

I will include a spare CPS and ignition switch.

This is a great, rust-free and solid Jeep.

You can come look at it, located in Hawthorn Woods, IL.
