Description of 1940 Packard Model 1803 160 Club Sedan

This is my 1940 Packard Super Eight 160 Club Sedan. I purchased the car five years ago from the estate of an auto dealer with a small collection of cars in San Francisco. The car's provenance previous to that was unavailable except that it was originally purchased from a Packard Dealer in Glendale, California in 1940 (see vehicle plate on cowl left side).

The car has the legendary Packard 8 cylinder, 356 cu in, 9 main bearing, 165 Hp engine which does not burn or consume oil.

Car condition is excellent:

  • Engine - Smooth, strong, excellent condition.
  • Transmission - smooth, quiet, synchronized in 2 and 3.
  • Clutch - Butter smooth.
  • Rear End - smooth, quiet.
  • Interior wood graining - original and excellent.
  • Upholstery, carpet and head liner - like new and beautiful.
  • All instruments work including clock (keeps lousy time).
  • Suspension - solid
  • Bumpers - Show age with very minor pitting.
  • Overall exterior paint - aged, beautiful job about 30 years ago, shows chipping (see the last photo which is the worst chipping on the hood).
  • Grill - Perfect with working thermostatically controlled louvers. I think the louvers are stainless steel.
  • 6 volt positive ground electrical system - aged but working fine.
  • New Diamond Back 215/85 R16 Radial 10 ply rated wide white wall tires (exact replacements for the original 7.00-16 bias ply tires.
  • No rust on this California car.
