Description of 1961 Pontiac Catalina

1961 Catalina 2 dr " Batwing" sedan. 389 Tri-power Super Duty 4 spd. This car was not originally born with a 389 Super Duty. but according to widely accepted Pontiac history. none of them were in 1961. The Super Duty parts; heads. intake. carbs. exhaust. and solid lifter cam/lifters. were either delivered in the trunk of the car. or sold over the counter at certain dealerships. then installed either by savvy racers. or by the dealership. This car was originally a 389 2 barrel automatic car. but according to history handed down by previous owners. the correct super duty parts were installed early on. and the car was then drag raced. Was the car ordered as a low budget sedan. then immediately turned into a super duty car with the sole purpose of drag racing back in 1961? No way to tell for sure. but one of the previous owners did tell me he had some old pics of the car lettered up in racing garb that he could probably dig up for me. The fact that the car has basically all of the very rare super duty parts. such as the 540306 heads. aluminum tri power intake and carbs. cast iron super duty exhaust manifolds with the collectors and side exits. distributor. and super rare solid lifter cam only non-snorkel air cleaner. all as a package. lends some credibility to the history. These 61 super duty parts are incredibly scarce. and although the car retains it's original block. it sounds like it has the super duty solid lifter cam. starts easily. doesn't smoke. has excellent oil pressure. and really screams when you get all 6 barrels opened up. I'm not an early super duty expert. but I'll be happy to verify any numbers or date codes for anyone who is interested. The car is radio. heater. and side mirror deleted. The previous owner told me he had the 3;90 posi third member rebuilt by Fabcraft. a well respected builder and parts supplier for early Pontiac rear ends. The clutch and trans work well. and the car shifts smooth. The car is an original black car. and was repainted about 30 years ago I was told. I would call the paint good driver quality. All of the original trim. chrome. grills. bumpers. tinted glass. etc. is in fantastic condition. This car looks very cool. turns heads everywhere you go. and is a blast to drive. If you like fast sleepers. this is a great car for you. Everywhere you take it. there will be an old timer wanting to reminisce about the early super duty cars. and how they really tore it up at the tracks. The interior is also in very good condition. no rips or tears. headliner is nice. and the dash and trim are all nice. The car is super solid and dry. no rust. and very clean underneath. The car also has the battery mounted in the trunk. as a super duty car would. and has an electric fuel pump. The car comes with a very cool old pair of Goodyear Blue Streak drag slicks that I am told were used on the car in it's early drag days. will be great for display purposes. I would welcome inspections. and will answer any questions to the best of my ability. I can help arrange shipping if need be. and will be happy to help load when carrier arrives. Thanks for looking
